Self Help Group

There are 135 SHGs formed since Oct 2003 by the Society. The significant development is that people have become aware of the socio-political and economic realities and began to think and act. More than 1700 families are benefited, and have grown in discipline and self-confidence.

SHGs are micro organizations. They need to be clubbed together in order to be powerful and need the support and guidance by an apex body. MMCS play the role of the Apex body. Many more people have come to request us to help them form SHGs.

Formation of SHGs provide work opportunities for its members through weaving of clothes, making tapioca chips, pickles and jams, bamboo crafts, grocery shops, chicken rearing, arecunut and banana business, ginger cultivation, etc.

All these have surely given additional income for them.

Malaria is a great concern in Garo Hills. SHGs are trained on prevention of malaria, nutrition, safe motherhood, health and hygiene.

SHG animators undergo various trainings prior to the formation of the groups as well as in an ongoing way. Some of the topics include awareness and motivation, methods of the formation of SHG, record keeping and management, leadership, project writing, and insurance company policy making.

As animators are empowered through various trainings, they can train their members in turn. Besides that, experts from Rubber Board, the Department of Veterinary, Horticulture, Insurance and Co-operative have given trainings to the SHG members on valuable subjects.

In 2007, a rally and exhibition was conducted. It was an opportunity to get to know other SHGs and to show their talents and abilities. The groups brought their own various products and sold during the exhibition.

The success stories of our SHGs motivate others to form groups. We give workshops on the concept of the Co-op movement, train them
how to start, and arrange various exposure programs. Many groups from different parts of North East Region have come here to get better ideas about the formation and function of the Cooperatives.

The Co-operative has taken up Social Audit of National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (NREGS) for the Kharkutta Block and the Songsak Block in 2009.
